Duncan Mackintosh is the Chief Executive of WaikatoLink Limited. Duncan has initiated a number of key strategic initiatives for WaikatoLink including the set-up of seed funds, an international internship programme, founding of ventures from University of Waikato IP and collaborations to facilitate commercialisation and increase the impact of innovation. Bruce is a Software Developer and IT Manager for WaikatoLink. His roles include undertaking application and web development, as well as managing WaikatoLink’s IT infrastructure. Bruce also has extensive knowledge in administrating and developing for Microsoft SharePoint. After returning to University as a mature student, Bruce completed a Bachelor of Computer Science and Mathematics and then his Masters which considered interfaces for managing large, location aware photo collections. Darren Harpur is responsible for the management several companies spun out of research conducted at the University of Waikato. As a commercial manager Darren is also involved in creating value for businesses out of new research carried out at the University of Waikato. Darren works closely with researchers at the University to help shape these opportunities early in the research pipeline, and engages with industry to help identify the needs/problems that exist. Darren comes from a background of 15 years experience in the financial sector, ranging from international trade and finance, commercial lending and retail banking. Darren managed a business contracted by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to deliver business management and advisory services to small and medium enterprises in the greater Lake Taupo District, and has owned several businesses himself. He has acted as a mentor to business owners under a nationally funded Business Mentor program. Most recently Darren co-managed a large scale residential gated golf estate. Lynda Hitchcock is the Executive Assistant for WaikatoLink and KiwiNet. Lynda is responsible for providing executive and administrative support to the senior management of WaikatoLink and KiwiNet and secretarial services to Boards of Directors. Lynda’s background includes roles as the regional project manager for NIWA Hamilton, setting up commercialisation processes and systems for the University of Waikato (prior to WaikatoLink) and project management in private industry in the area of national and regional agricultural projects and product trials. Nigel leads the commercial team at WaikatoLink, with the goal of increasing knowledge transfer and decreasing the complexity of the process. He has worked in commercialisation and technology marketing since 1995, 15 of these years in Europe. Over the course of 300+ commercialisation / marketing projects he has identified a series of essential ingredients for a successful project and these are now reflected in our processes. Bram Smith is the founding General Manager of the Kiwi Innovation Network (KiwiNet), a consortium of 9 publically funded research organisations in New Zealand. Bram has a background in mechanical and biomedical engineering with specific experience in software development and project management. Prior to KiwiNet he was Technology Development Manager for WaikatoLink Ltd where he was responsible for managing development staff and Consortium Manager for UniCom which is responsible for investing government development funding. He has a history with start-up ventures including starting his own company developing engine tuning software, and was closely involved in a biomedical equipment start-up company from Aalborg University in Denmark. Grant Waring joined WaikatoLink as Financial Controller in October 2010 and oversees much of the financial, administrative and HR function of the company. As a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and a BMS graduate from the University of Waikato, Grant began his career in the tax department before moving in to Chartered Accountancy firms following completion of his OE. As a Software Developer for WaikatoLink, Nick is experienced in application and web development. He has knowledge and expertise in natural language processing, machine learning, image processing and open-source software licensing. He also plays an important role as a technology translator, helping the commercialisation team understand complex IT technologies. Before starting at WaikatoLink, Nick completed both his Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical and Masters degrees at the University of Waikato. Terry Allen is the Founder and Managing Director of Allen Strategic, a company specialising in the provision of governance, strategy and execution services at board and executive level. In a career spanning 20 years, Terry has held senior roles in multi-national technology companies, including 12 years with Microsoft. He also ran the incubation business for Auckland University’s Icehouse incubator for 2 years, focusing on business growth strategy, business start-ups, commercialization and company governance.
Terry is currently a director for a number of organisations including, Klickex, Kern Mobile, Sharesight, Theta systems, The ecentre business incubator at Massey University and is advisor to Musac, Waikatolink and UniServices, Auckland University’s commercialisation office.
Bill te Brake
Bill te Brake is the Co-Founder and President of Sales and Marketing for Aldera Limited. Bill has over 20 years’ experience at senior management level within start-ups, SMEs and multinational corporations across a range of industries including human health, veterinary diagnostics, veterinary marketing, animal health, agriculture and IT. During his career, Bill has been a partner and shareholder in 7 start-up businesses, predominantly in the human and animal health sectors. The most significant of these has generated a 28-fold return on capital investment, while others have either been purchased by multinationals or continue to operate profitably.
Dr. Nichola Harcourt
Nichola has a PhD in Biomedical Immunology as well as formal qualifications in herbal medicine, plant protection and physiology. Nichola recently completed a 3-year project which identified a novel anti-inflammatory compound in honey, and has a strong technical background in bioactive research. Nichola was recently identified as a key emerging scientist in the functional foods research platform with a MORST award (2010), adding to an impressive collection of awards including Senior Scholar in Biological Sciences at Auckland University (1994).
Fraser Smith was one of nine investment managers responsible for due diligence for the New Zealand Government’s investment of US$40,000,000 per annum targeting the development of high value, high-margin, technology-based intellectual property before taking up his role at WaikatoLink as commercial manager. In 2005 he established an office for government investment agency Foundation for Research Science and Technology (FRST) in Waikato, New Zealand’s highest growth location for agbio and agritech businesses. Fraser has developed extensive networks within the New Zealand science sector. In particular, he has been exposed to many of the agbio and agritech opportunities within New Zealand. He has wide-ranging experience in analyzing, then assisting companies in planning for successful development, growth, and revaluation. He has considerable knowledge of the risks involved in early stage development and experience in developing risk mitigation strategies. Fraser has a life science background with a MSC (Hons) from The University of Waikato.
The HotHouse is a division within WaikatoLink that employs students and hosts interns who support our commercialisation projects. HotHouse students work on a range of activities including market research, technology development, graphic design and strategic projects.
Jecoba Denny | BCGD (Hons) Waikato
Jecoba Denny is one of Waikato-Link’s skilled and creative in-house designers. After graduating at the University of Waikato with first class Honours in computer graphic design, Jecoba was inducted into the team at Waikato Link and has been producing successful and original design works for our projects ever since. Jecoba has contributed to, and completed multi-media design projects for successful and up and coming companies, using everything from web and print, to animation and illustration. Businesses such as KiwiNet, Aldera, Ingenuity Excellence, 11Ants Analytics and right here at WaikatoLink have all benefited from her unique and professional design skills.
As well as design, Jecoba has interests in travel, fine cheeses and is a keen socialite. In her spare time she constructs personal building projects with her substantial power tool collection, as well as dabbling in freelance graphic design.
Samantha Felton is in her third year studying a Bachelor of Management Studies at the University of Waikato. She is aiming to complete her Honours next year majoring in Strategic Management and Finance. She supports Bram Smith and Sara Muggeridge by working on KiwiNet activities, helping to increase collaboration between research organisations and to drive economic outcomes for New Zealand through the commercialisation of technology. Her role involves working in a variety of areas including; updating the innovation database, developing international connection initiatives (such as the precision agriculture exchange), and completing industry foresighting and IP patent searches as part of her Marketing Researcher role. Samantha also provides support to the commercial team at WaikatoLink, helping to research potential technologies for the New Zealand market.
Samantha is a keen equestrian rider and is currently on the New Zealand Young Rider Squad having won the Young Rider National Championships in February this year.
Nick Hablous is a third year Communications student at the University of Waikato. He has an interest in all things marketing and entrepreneur related. Nick is a firm believer in technology based investment and development as a way forward for both the region and the country. Working closely with the Waikatolink team and their partners, he aims to generate interest and deliver current feedback to a range of parties. Using creative and new methods to achieve these goals will be a priority. His role is also a learning platform and goes hand in hand with his studies.
Separate from work and study Nick enjoys getting out there and enjoying some of the outdoor activities on offer. Hamilton’s central location is great in that you are only a couple of hours away from beaches, snow, fresh water, and native bush.
